Practical applications for plant upgrades and decarbonisation
These applications explore competitiveness, resilience and certainty in practice. Figures are client-supplied indicative opportunities for assessment, not measured Alcheemika project results. Outcomes depend on the project baseline, scope and operating conditions.
Refinery conversion for renewable diesel and SAF
The FIT framework supports assessment of refinery units for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel. The client’s proposed pathway includes potential lifecycle greenhouse gas savings of up to 96% against the applicable fossil comparator. This upper-end opportunity requires validation of feedstock, hydrogen and energy sources, process design and the relevant lifecycle method.
Bio-feed co-processing in catalytic crackers
Introducing a bio-oil into a fluid catalytic cracking unit can change heat balance, catalyst behaviour and product yields. We assess feed quality, injection, reactor and regenerator performance, and downstream constraints to establish suitable operating options.
Alternative feedstocks in steam crackers
Hydrotreated bio-feeds and other alternative inputs can change cracking behaviour and the load on downstream systems. We model furnace operation, product distribution, compressor duties and separation capacity, then compare targeted upgrades and suitable operating changes.
Heat recovery across connected process units
Heat rejected by one unit may be useful elsewhere. A project assessment can test whether a 22% thermal energy reduction and payback below 18 months are achievable against the plant baseline. These client-proposed targets depend on heat availability, equipment costs, energy tariffs and operating hours.
Fired heater and boiler electrification
Full electric replacement may eliminate up to 100% of direct fuel-combustion emissions from the heating duty replaced, where no fuel firing remains within that boundary. We assess power supply, capacity, controls and cost. Process emissions, backup firing and purchased-electricity emissions are evaluated separately.
Hydrogen and carbon dioxide utilisation
Hydrogen used as a fuel presents different engineering needs from hydrogen used as a raw material. We assess each role, including combustion, materials, supply quality and process integration. For carbon dioxide conversion, we evaluate suitable synthesis routes and the energy and hydrogen requirements for products such as e-methanol.
Scaling a new process with better evidence
For a first commercial plant, we combine pilot data, models, engineering and cost analysis to bring greater certainty to investment decisions. The client’s proposed ambition of up to 35% faster time to market can be assessed against a defined schedule. It depends on technology readiness, approvals, procurement and execution; financing remains a separate decision.
